Fireworks and a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Delight over Deal Bringing Back Captives
The declaration of an agreement expected to lead to the release captives held in the Gaza Strip for over 24 months has caused joy and relief throughout the nation.
A group which has campaigned for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called an “historic breakthrough”.
The agreement—still requiring approved by Israel’s war cabinet—involves the return of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 hostages have been returned—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 bodies have been retrieved while eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Joyous gatherings have unfolded at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled before the deal being signed.
A crowd began clapping and dancing under US and Israeli flags—one woman displaying a placard that read: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” the woman said.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, wept as she watched the people celebrating.
“I’m very excited—it is such a comfort,” she stated. “We need to see their return home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice with Fireworks
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks to mark the news that he would be homecoming.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker said while holding her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy was palpable in the streets in Tel Aviv after the news.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Raise Glasses
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari rejoiced with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then cheering “To life”, meaning “to life”. She has advocated for the release of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their sibling Liran Berman posted: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, and her body found in a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other hostage families in advocating for an agreement that brings the homecoming of all those still being held within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he was “broken” that his cousin will not be among those coming back home but was “radiant with happiness” for the families of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she felt like she was living “in a dream”.
“We are immensely thankful to the President and all he has accomplished for us. It seems like it might be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than before,” she commented.
However, she warned that it was still too soon to celebrate.
“Until the last hostage returns, we won’t open the bubbly. We will continue struggling... until the end,” she affirmed.
“So many things might occur up to the final instant so this is why we are extremely cautious. We just want to express gratitude to all who participated in the work and ensure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only once the last captive is back home.”
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment through a truce agreement earlier this year.
