London's Police Force Begins Inquiry into Offensive Vandalism at Central London Police Base
London’s largest police force has opened a formal probe after racist graffiti was spotted in a restricted area of their precincts.
Discovery at London HQ
Vandalism featuring the N-word was allegedly found on a bathroom partition at the police building on 29 August. The writing was reported by an officer and promptly reported.
The location is off-limits to the visitors and is only used by Met employees.
History of Misconduct
Charing Cross has been hit by numerous accusations of toxic conduct. Earlier this month, several personnel were temporarily removed amid claims of racism and misogyny.
The IOPC is currently investigating those allegations.
Official Reaction
The force commented: “Recently, a member of staff flagged offensive writing at the building. A probe was immediately launched into a racially motivated offense.”
Someone familiar indicated that the belief among officials is that a staff member within the department was likely responsible.
IOPC Response
The independent office stated that it had not been informed of the latest discovery. This issue is separate from the ongoing investigation into previous allegations.
A representative said: “Our team plans to coordinate with police officials to obtain further information.”
Commissioner Pledge
Mark Rowley, who has led the organization for the last few years, has pledged to clean up the work environment of the UK’s largest department.
Over 1,400 officers have been ousted since 2022, amid efforts to bolster integrity.
Systemic Challenges
This is not the initial instance vandalism have occurred within the police force. In 2019, a swastika was scrawled in a restricted section of a different precinct.
A 2023 report stated that the force is institutionally racist, a finding that the commissioner disputed.
Demands for Change
Andy George of the NBPA said that the graffiti was further proof of deep-rooted racism within the Met.
He emphasized: “The Met is past repair. The time for minor adjustments. The service should be broken up and reformed.”
Political Statement
Sadiq Khan expressed they were deeply concerned by the reports and emphasized that racism has no place in the service.
Representatives said: “The mayor will persist in hold the commissioner to account and insist on a force that the community deserve.”
