Major Online Outage Impacts Dozens Sites and Mobile Apps

A widespread online failure has disrupted numerous online platforms and apps globally, with users noting troubles connecting to the web due to difficulties at Amazon’s online infrastructure service.

The affected apps comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-owned platforms including its primary shopping website and the Ring security doorbell company.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was affected as well as its affiliates Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were further notifications of issues reaching the the tax authority online portal on that morning. Also in the UK, several Ring customers turned to social media to complain their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of problems on particular platforms reached the tens of thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the issue originated in the Atlantic coast of the United States at AWS, a division that provides essential online framework for numerous firms, who lease capacity on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive cloud computing system.

Shortly after late night (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for AWS services in a region on the east coast of the United States. The cascading impact seemed to disrupt apps globally, and the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the same sites in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on web disruptions, also reported a surge in issues on the start of the week, including several cases situated in Virginia, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the outage started.
