United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives voted in favour to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit next week.

He was appointed interim leader subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that removed the former president in winter 2024, ending over a decade of domestic strife.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Muslim faction HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations during July.

More Penalties Removed

Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of these restrictions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and to friendly nations for their support of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week comes after American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot for national reconciliation".

Both presidents held discussions for the first time during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of Arab nations.

Following that encounter, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country until he severed ties back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting will not be Sharaa's first trip to America during this period. During September, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to present to the United Nations gathering in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

During his address, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
